When the Bauer Media Outdoor passenger shelter goes green in Ghent
Bauer Media Outdoor is deploying green roofs on the passenger shelters at Place Woodrow Wilson in Ghent. A sign of the City’s support for the implementation of green roofs, this development is part of a pilot project that could be extended.
Four Bauer Media Outdoor passenger shelters in Place Woodrow Wilson have recently been fitted with green roofs. Through this initiative, the City of Ghent aims to demonstrate its ambition to offer greener solutions. It is also a pilot project designed to determine whether more shelters can be made more environmentally friendly. Green roofs encourage biodiversity, retain rainwater for longer and provide cooling on hot days. In summer, a green roof is 30 degrees cooler than a black roof.

As a place of high footfall and connections, Woodrow Wilson Square is the ideal place to showcase the City of Ghent's green roof ambitions. These shelters represent real oases of greenery and freshness in the heart of the city, in an area with limited green spaces. Made up of succulents and grasses, the green roof offers multiple benefits: it limits fine particles, stores rainwater and reduces heat. It also attracts bees and insects and stimulates biodiversity. By promoting green landscaping, the city council is creating a 'cooler' city that can absorb climate peaks and depressions more effectively.
Béatrice Moës, Development Director Bauer Media Ourtdoor, explains: 'Cities are facing increasingly marked changes linked to growing urbanisation. It is our responsibility, as a platform for collective utility, to actively improve the urban environment. We are working ever more closely with cities and their stakeholders to offer 'Smart' and more sustainable solutions, with real added value for citizens.'
