Together at the forefront of more sustainable and smarter port operations

Bauer Media Outdoor and the Port of Helsinki are guided by very consistent sustainability objectives. Sustainability is an important part of our operations and we aim for a carbon neutral future. We operate responsibly from a social, economic and environmental perspective.

The advertising cooperation between the Port of Helsinki and Bauer Media Outdoor started in 2020. It includes versatile advertising solutions from digital surfaces to promotions. Advertising equipment can be found in all terminals. In addition to this, the ports also have an Agora vending machine, which is part of Bauer Media Outdoor's Smart City activities, and electric car charging points. These cost-effective solutions will support the transition towards more sustainable operations.

The result of our collaboration will be a channel for the port's own communication, excellent advertising space for brands and a port complex that better serves passengers and city dwellers. Citizens will gain added value from an expanding network of services and advertising will be met with a positive attitude.

"Both our own strategy and the advertising partnership with Bauer Media Outdoor aim to deliver a seamless passenger experience. For travellers, this translates into a sense of ownership of the content of the ads. For advertisers, this ensures the right target groups, i.e. the best value for money," says Marika Pauli, Business Development and Concept Manager at the Port of Helsinki.

Smart Agora vending machine serves both the consumer and the advertiser

The growth of parcel traffic is a global megatrend. In the worst case scenarios, emissions from delivery traffic may increase globally by up to 32% and congestion by 21% in the coming years (1).

The growth of e-commerce and parcel traffic is increasing the need for new logistics solutions to effectively manage CO2 emissions and congestion caused by parcel delivery.

A 24-hour-a-day, low-cost parcel delivery solution within walking distance is a more sustainable option than, for example, home delivery. Parcels can be delivered to the Agora vending machine during off-peak hours, helping to minimise the inconvenience of increased parcel traffic.

Agora also brings many other benefits: real-time and interactive digital displays create huge opportunities for both advertising and communication. They will be used, for example, to guide passengers and people moving around the area, as well as for the port's own communications.

Thanks to the digital advertising surfaces, the vending machine is fully ad-supported. The Agora parcel terminal is located in the South Harbour.

Charging facilities facilitate the transition to electric vehicles

In recent years, the Port of Helsinki has been actively building a charging network for electric vehicles, both for its own use and that of its stakeholders. Solutions for passengers also make use of advertising-funded charging points.

Together with our partners, we want to build more sustainable urban solutions, including electric car charging points. In the harbour environment, ad-supported charging points can be found at the Katajanokka terminal and the Olympic Terminal.

The solution consists of a charging station and a separate advertising device. The equipment will be placed in locations suitable for charging and the advertising equipment will be installed in locations with significant traffic flows. The advertising will provide a central point of contact for car-owning pioneers and support the shift towards more sustainable transport. At the same time, the advertising display will provide a channel for port communication, for example to guide port users.

The advertising-funded charging points will be made possible together with our partners, such as the Port of Helsinki and Virta Global, an electric car charging service provider. The revenues from advertising will be used to cover the costs of installing, deploying and maintaining the network.
