Recent study: 47% of advertising revenue from outdoor advertising companies goes to society

In 2022, outdoor advertising companies contributed an estimated €40 million to Finnish society.

The 47% share of advertising revenue that goes to society consists of maintenance and installation of public infrastructure, community taxes, rents paid to the public sector, incidental payroll and taxes, and free media exposure donated to public actors and charities.

The largest part of the social subsidy is rents, paid by outdoor advertising companies to the tune of around €18.6 million (2022). Rents are paid to cities, municipalities, transport companies and Finavia, among others.

In turn, the installation and maintenance of public infrastructure makes everyday life easier for many Finns. The almost 3,000 bus stops in the capital region alone are a good example of the contribution of outdoor advertising companies to Finnish society. Outdoor operators also finance the maintenance of more than 6,000 city bikes in Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa and Turku.

In addition, outdoor advertising companies paid €16.8 million in rents to the private sector in 2022. This amount is not included in the 47% share, but it can be seen as having an indirect impact on the Finnish economy.
